“Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”
St. George Orthodox Church is located in the peaceful town of Sylvan Lake, just 25 km west of Red Deer, in the province of Alberta. We are an Orthodox Christian parish in Central Alberta welcoming everyone who seeks God, prayer, spiritual guidance, and a living church community.
Surrounded by the beauty of nature, our parish offers a quiet and blessed environment for prayer, inner peace, and spiritual growth in Christ. Whether you are a lifelong Orthodox Christian, a newcomer to Canada, or someone interested in learning about the Orthodox faith, you are warmly welcome in our parish family.
St. George Parish is a spiritual home for Orthodox Christians throughout Alberta and Canada. Here we gather to pray together, strengthen our faith, support one another, and grow closer to Christ through the life of the Church.
At present, our Orthodox services are held in a rented worship space in Sylvan Lake. Although temporary, this place has become a true church home for our parishioners - a place of prayer, fellowship, and spiritual unity.
Families, youth, seniors, newcomers, and visitors from across Central Alberta come here seeking an Orthodox church near Red Deer and a welcoming Christian community rooted in faith and tradition.
St. George Orthodox Parish is a growing Orthodox Christian community united by love for God and dedication to the spiritual life. We carefully preserve the traditions of the Holy Orthodox Church while remaining open and welcoming to all people.
Parish life includes much more than worship services. Our community regularly participates in:
• Spiritual discussions and Bible studies
• Orthodox Christian education
• Parish feast celebrations
• Family and youth support
• Charitable and community outreach initiatives
We strive to support people of all ages - from children and young families to seniors and newcomers adjusting to life in Canada.
The rector of our parish is Victor Kramarenko, who has faithfully served the Church for more than 25 years.
He often reminds parishioners:
“True joy comes when we walk toward God together - hand in hand, heart to heart.”
One of the main sacred treasures of our church is the icon of St. George the Great Martyr and Victory-Bearer containing a relic of the saint. You can learn more in the section dedicated to the holy relics and sacred items of the church.
Divine services at our Orthodox church in Sylvan Lake are generally celebrated in both Church Slavonic and English, helping preserve Orthodox liturgical tradition while making worship accessible to English-speaking parishioners and visitors.
Please see our Liturgical Calendar and Service Schedule section for upcoming services and feast days.
